ASL 101: Intro to American Sign Language

ASL 101: Intro to American Sign Language

UNE Course Description: This course builds the foundations for the American Sign Language (ASL) experience. It introduces the beginning ASL vocabulary, grammar, visual-gestural communication, use of idioms and their overall conversational skills. Emphasis is placed on the development of signing skills in a supportive classroom atmosphere along with interaction with the Deaf community. ASL 101 also includes an examination of the cultural values and rules of behavior of the Deaf community in the US and develops an understanding and appreciation of Deaf culture.

During this course I was able to be fully immersed into the deaf culture and the world of ASL. My professor was deaf and did not speak, it was automatic learning. I left this class not only knowing the basics of ASL but being able to tell stories and carry on conversations.

I have linked here a Youtube video of myself telling a story I made up, but using American Sign Language.
